Exactly What Makes Paddington Bear So Loved? - Let's Find Out

The character for the famous Paddington bear was found with a tag around his neck at the paddington Station in London, asking someone to please take care of him. He was taken by the Browns and called Paddington, after the train station where they found him.. Paddington was adopted by the Browns and went home to live with them. The Brown family has never been the same since paddington came to live with them.

How Paddington Began

In 1958 Michael Bond wrote this imaginative story in a book called "A Bear Called Paddington". The inspiration for the book was a forlorn teddy bear sitting all alone on a shelf in a Department Store in London where Michael sought shelter from a snow storm. The true story is that he purchase the little bear and took it home for his wife, where it was names Paddington, after the nearby train station.

In the beginning Michael wanted paddington to be born in Africa but since there are no bears in Africa, Paddington's birthplace became Peru. The story he told was that Padding Bear was sent to the train station by his Aunt Lucy that had become too old to care for him anymore.

Michael Bond not only patterned his stories after his own Paddington, but the Browns in the story bore a slight resemblance to the Bonds. The first book was a great success and between 1968 and 1981 this led to six more collections. Pen and ink drawings were illustrated by artist Peggy Fortnum for a few of the books. A Malayan bear, living at the London Zoo was the inspiration for her artwork.

Paddington Bear was a curious teddy bear. Of course Paddington soon found the busy city so different fro dark Peru. The fascination for Paddington Bear was a surprise for most Londoners. The adorable way Paddington observes life in general is what endears him to all his fans. Paddington Bear is far from naive as he shows wisdom beyond his years after being raised by his matronly Aunt Lucy.

Due to his own TV series in 1972, Paddington Bears and memorabilia soon became very popular. He wears a floppy bush hat, a blue coat and wellington boots. In the last years there were other clothes added to his wardrobe, in order to keep him fashionable. The original Paddington Bears are collector's items.
