The Reasons Why Your Kitty Won't Use Their Kitty Litter Box

The litter box is the first thing you should check. It should be in a quiet, private area of the house. It works out best to have the litter box in the basement with the door slightly opened to allow easy access giving your cat privacy and keeping the odors to a minimal. Some use a closet but if you do this be sure and keep the box clean to reduce odors in such a confined space and don't forget to leave the door open!

You may want to place the litter box under a table out of sight if the floor is tile you should avoid placing it on carpet since it is very hard to eliminate urine smell in carpet. Have you changed the litter box recently? Have you moved the litter box to be located in a more open space lately? Should the litter box be cleaned?

When buying new litter avoid using litter that has heavy scents cats prefer using unscented litter. Check the depth of the litter the box to make sure it has not changed some cats prefer having deep litter and others prefer low litter. As you cat grows it will need to get a larger litter box. As your cat gets older it is harder for them to enter and exit the litter box. Separating your cat’s food and water dish from the litter box is a must they will not want to eat if located close by the litter box. If your cat has picked out a particular room to soil try closing the door to that room if you can or cover the target area with furniture. You may want to put their food dish in the target area since cats do not like to eat where they go to the bathroom.

Your cat needs to go to the Vet for a regular check up. If you have more than one cat get each one of them their own litter box. If you have moved lately your cat will be able to sense where the former owner’s cat would urinate. Always allow your cat privacy when it is going to the bathroom.

It will take anywhere from 3 to 8 weeks for a cat to get adjusted to new surroundings it is best to have patience. When there is a change in your family your cat will need time to adjust to either the addition of a new baby or the loss of a family member due to death of a spouse. If at all possible gradually make major lifestyle changes in your life to avoid confusing your cat’s daily routine schedule and causing problems when your cat attempts to accept the changes.

When you get upset with your cat never punish them by kicking or hitting at them or rubbing their nose in their own urine is not a punishment since the smell does not bother them. It is useless to punish a cat after the fact if they have urinated, as they are not able to understand right from wrong and by doing so will only cause more urine problems. Cats are naturally very clean animals and they know where they are going. Always show your cat you love them when they have to overcome stress or deal with anxiety in their lives.
