MFT CEU Requirements

Marriage and Family Therapists often have questions surrounding their continuing education responsibilities during each renewal cycle. It can be difficult keeping up with the latest expectations of one's continuing education.

The CE requirements for each state will differ somewhat from one another. Each state may change these requirements at any time. It is critical for the licensee to stay informed of their state's rules and regulations. It is recommended for the licensed MFT to review their appropriate state board's website each renewal period to determine if there have been any changes that may affect them.

The MFT continuing education requirements for each state can be met from a number of online providers. Not all providers are approved in all states. In order to have one's ceus accepted, it is pertinent to know if the provider has obtained the appropriate approval to offer CE in that state. A good CE provider will list each state board and corresponding provider number on their website to indicate approval status.

Here are some suggestions on ways to keep yourself informed regarding your CE requirements:

Keep track of all the contact methods suggested by your state board.

If available, subscribe to your state board email and/or paper newsletter. This will help you stay current with ceu requirements for your state license and any applicable changes.

Identify a CE provider that gives access to the various state board's websites via links. These providers may also provide links to the national board's websites from which they have obtained approval. This information should be located on the ceu provider's website. Unfortunately, not all providers have this information. The ones that do are providing a valuable resource.

Start early. Make an effort to begin your license renewal process well before the due date. This gives you the luxury of time to do your research to make sure you are aware of all of your current continuing education requirements and the rules that govern them. You can also use the extra time to select courses that will challenge you beyond your current abilities, and not just settle for courses you are already comfortable with. Each renewal period provides ample time to get everything done that is required. Use the time wisely and you will find yourself strides ahead of those that don't.
